The assessment criteria are intended as indicators only, they are not added up to make your final mark. The categories are not
equally important. ‘Evidence of Research, ‘Conceptual Understanding’ and ‘Contribution to Theme’ are more important than
other aspects.
Evidence of Research:
The essay must demonstrate that relevant and appropriate research was undertaken for the essay. The quality of research and
literature used, the way in which it establishes linkages to broader literature on the topic and the linkages between your topic
and the broader themes and issues arising in the course are important to this criterion.
Conceptual Understanding:
The essay needs to demonstrate an understanding of the central concepts used (for example: culture, modernity, everyday life
etc) either with definitions (for difficult or very important technical words) or the use of concepts in such a way that
demonstrates knowledge.
Content:
The essay should be consistent with relevant material in the subject outline. Assessment should relate to wide use of relevant
texts and examples provided in the subject readings list and workshops.
Structure:
The essay should be clearly organised and offer an argument or position. The structure should offer the reader insight to the
argument through coherent examples, texts and fluency in writing. It should include a conclusion that summarises the main
points.
Expression:
Clear expression is an important part of a clear argument. Attention to grammar, syntax and style is required. Spelling and
punctuation are important in assessment of the overall work.
Referencing:
The Harvard system of referencing should be used.
Plagiarism will be dealt with as a disciplinary issue. Essays must have a bibliography.
Presentation:
The essay should be legible, readable, conform to high (and appropriate) standards of written style and grammar. Students
should include a Statement of Authorship with their work.
