Essays will be assessed on content, argument, style and structure and should follow the structure of the examples provided on Moodle. It should be a thesis of your opinion and research rather than a presentation of facts alone. You can write an unsubstantiated story of what you think. You MUST back-up your position (read opinion) with authoritative data and subsequent analysis as well as addressing arguments which are counter to your position.
The following format guidelines apply:
Size 12 font;
Referenced in the Oxford style, with footnotes rather than endnotes.
Word count is not to include footnotes or the bibliography.
The file format is to be Microsoft Word .doc or .docx.
Essay title. The essay title does not necessarily have to be your chosen essay topic restated. If a different essay title is used it should reflect what the essay is about (ie: its central theme) yet it should still be easy for assessors to identify which essay topic is being addressed.
Altering your topic’s scope. You may alter (by narrowing or broadening) the scope of your chosen essay topic if you feel that it will enable a better, clearer argument to be made. For example: An essay topic could be “Is Plan Beersheba good for logistics?” The scope of this topic could be narrowed to: “The introduction of the Plan Beersheba has brought predictability to the workload of CSSBs.” Rescoping this topic has narrowed a topic that was perhaps too broad to discuss in 3000 words, down to a more specific area that can be explored in sufficient detail that a clear and well supported position can be argued.
Thesis Statement. This is the point where many writers fail because they are not able to unambiguously convey to the reader what the essay is actually positing. Clearly state your essay’s purpose straight after the introduction!
Signposting. This component of the essay is to directly follow the thesis statement and is to briefly explain how the essay is going to prove / support the thesis statement. This component of the essay is important as it gives structure and predictability to the essay, thus making it easier for the reader to comprehend.
Evidence. Any analysis conducted is expected to be preceded by substantiated facts. This usually requires initial research to be conducted with appropriate referencing to prove any statements made. Unsubstantiated assertions are not proven facts and in some cases can be construed as plagiarism if work is not appropriately referenced. For a 3000 word essay, between 15-30 reference references would be acceptable, from between 10 and 25 different sources. An authoritative source is one that is published and has a high degree of credibility.
Argumentative essay writing guides. An argumentative essay writing guide and two example essays are available on Moodle to explain and demonstrate the desired essay structure.
