Examine the similarities and differences between organisational mentoring and coaching approaches for managers to developing subordinates

COACHING: An old definition of managing and leading is ‘getting things done through other people’. A
critical skill for managers is the ability to develop subordinates so that they have increased capacity to help
achieve the organisation’s goals. Two approaches managers can use are mentoring and coaching. Examine
the similarities and differences between organisational mentoring and coaching approaches for managers
to developing subordinates. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach to developing
subordinates in the workplace.
(Include in your examination, amongst other aspects, a description of what is meant by both mentoring and coaching;
find tools for measuring individual capacity to mentor/coach others; what are some of the causes of problems that
occur when a manager is trying to develop subordinates; outline any published steps/approaches/models for
mentoring or coaching; give some examples of how mentoring or coaching programs have been implemented in
organisations. Include actual industry examples to support your discussion.)
