All students are to write an essay as part of the course assessment. The essay topics and evaluation criteria are listed below.
The essay should be no longer than 3,000 words (+/- 10%) and submitted with a header sheet specific to your tutor. Your identity will not be revealed to your tutor. Each response should demonstrate understanding of the relevant theory, with application to examples. Choose ONE of the following four topics for your essay.
- For a multinational enterprise (MNE), what are relative advantages/disadvantages for exporting and importing? How can the corporate strategy best be served by, respectively, exporting and importing processes? You should support your argument with one or more critical case studies.
- For a multinational enterprise (MNE) of your choice, consider the interests of the various stakeholders and analyse the extent to which the organization should meet their needs.
- International money laundering is a process by which accepted principles of accounting can be abused in order to cover up illegal business activities. What impact does this have on the operations of companies operating legally and how should managers ensure that their companies avoid being involved in money laundering.
- Three major tools of international finance are cost benefit analysis (CBA), payback period and net present value (NPV). Using critical case study examples analyse the effectiveness of each approach. You should show when the approaches should and should not be applied.
The basic format of the essay should be a theory, concept or approach which is critically analysed. Then a case study or practical example should be presented that not only illustrates how the theory can be applied, but also reveals further critical insights into the theory itself. The conclusion should demonstrate how the case study can lead to an improvement in the theory.
Students should make all efforts to avoid plagiarism by reading and reflecting on the information sources before committing their own thoughts to paper; there is never a reason to copy, although quotations may be occasionally appropriate. It is recommended that students should take note of the Turnitin similarity score when they submit. Correct Harvard style referencing should always be used.
