key concepts and roles of sport development, including an understanding of the difference between development of sport and development through sport
o Throughout the semester, students will be introduced to the key concepts and roles of sport development, including an understanding of the difference between development of sport and development through sport. Additionally, students will learn how sport development programs occur at all levels of the sport system, from grass-roots programs at club level, through to state and national sport organisations.
Students will select a sport of their choice that is on the Australian Sports Commission recognised National Sport Organisation register.
Students will be required to research the sport development programs for that particular sport (including both NSOs and SSOs), and provide a brief explanation and analysis of each program, noting its target participants and anticipated outcomes (e.g., disability program with a social inclusion agenda versus a talent identification program with an elite development agenda).
Once the key sport development programs have been identified and discussed, the students will then map each program on a matrix (to be provided on LMS and discussed in class).
Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of the key concepts inherent within sport development, and must draw upon the significant body of sport development research literature to support their analysis and discussion, including research journal articles and research texts.
