Case study

Carlos, aged 29 is from Chile and speaks limited English. Carlos is part of the  Home and Community Care team (HACC) you  run for clients from diverse backgrounds and he provides services for four male Spanish speaking clients. Carlos has  always received excellent feedback from clients, but  lately many of the other  workers in the team have been complaining about Carlos’ accent stating they have many difficulties understanding him. The team coordinator has also approached you to complain about Carlos’ ability to write care notes.

As the manager of the organisation please answer the  following questions:

  1. What communication strategies would you use to address concerns raised by your team in relation to Carlos?
  2. What resources/development strategies would you use to assist Carlos in the workplace?
  3. What could be done with the rest of the team to address apprehensions about Carlos’ language barriers?
  4. What could you do to encourage collaboration and improve the team’s ability to work with diverse clients and colleahues?
  5. How could you generate a supportive workplace by valuing and promoting the benefits of a diverse workforce?
