To examine the nurse’s role in health promotion in relation to a chosen topic
‘To examine the nurse’s role in health promotion in relation to a chosen topic’
Introduction
- Epidemiological evidence – how big is the problem – what do the statistics say
- Explain why the topic chosen lends itself to health promotion – this may relate to primary, secondary or tertiary prevention
- Why is the area of professional importance to nursing – explain why and how nurses could make a contribution to preventing the health issue from arising in the first place or getting worse
- Outline any policies related to the topic
- Outline what the assignment is about and how it will be structured
Main Body
- Enlarge on epidemiological evidence and how topic causes disease or ill health (take care NOT to follow a medical model here – remember this is about health promotion so DO not go into the anatomy and physiology of any diseases)
- Outline what is currently happening in Oman in relation to prevention of disease/ ill health associated with the topic – don’t forget the focus here is ‘nursing practice’
- Justify why you have chosen the health promotion model or approaches or psychological theory by comparing your choice with the other model/approaches/theory in the same category
- Critically discuss how health promoting nursing practice could be improved in the topic area relating this to a health promotion model or approaches or psychological theory– remember to consult the evidence for what works and what has and has not been successful. The practice you propose MUST be based on evidence
- Outline issues that may influence success – critically discuss potential barriers to implementation of what you propose – what may influence the success (or otherwise) of your intervention and discuss how these interventions would be evaluated.
Conclusion
- Summarise – bring all the main points together – what you set out to do, how you did and did you get there – what were the main outcomes
- Make recommendations for how health promoting nursing practice should be taken forward
